Ask five vendors what a guest post costs and you’ll hear five different numbers. One reason is that “a guest post” can mean very different things. It might be a link on a 50-visit blog, or an editorial placement on a national news site. This guide pulls together the public pricing data available in 2026, explains why prices vary, and points out the costs that don’t show up on the price tag.
A note on the numbers: every figure below comes from a public study or vendor article, and each is credited. Many of these sources sell links themselves. Treat the figures as rough ranges, not quotes.
The short answer
BuzzStream’s 2026 analysis covers more than 250,000 sites with full price, DR and traffic data. In it, a guest post bought through a typical vendor averaged about $461. Buying directly from the site averaged about $295. The spread is wide: around $200 at the bottom of the authority scale, and about $3,000 for sites rated DR 80 and above.
Link insertions are a cheaper option. In these, your link is added to an article that already exists, sometimes called a niche edit. BuzzStream’s separate 2026 study of about 420,000 sites put the average insertion price near $179. Only around 15% of sites offered insertions at all.
What actually drives the price
1. Traffic matters more than DR
Domain Rating and Domain Authority are third-party scores, and they can be inflated. Organic traffic is harder to fake, and pricing tracks it closely. In BuzzStream’s guest-post data, sites with under 100 monthly organic visits averaged about $229. Sites with over 100,000 visits went up to about $3,210.
Takeaway: for the same money, a site with steady, relevant organic traffic is usually a better buy than one with a high DR and little real audience.
2. Niche
The same placement costs more in competitive or regulated niches. One 2026 pricing guide from Setproduct uses multipliers on a general-interest base price: about 1.8x for finance, 2–3x for health, medical and legal, 2.5–3x for crypto, and 5–10x for iGaming and CBD, where many publishers refuse outright.
3. Link attribute
Some sellers charge more for a dofollow link than for one marked rel="sponsored" or nofollow. Always ask how the link will be marked, and get it in writing.
4. Permanence
A post that stays up for years is worth more than one that disappears after a few months. Most price lists don’t say how long a post will stay live.
5. Content
Some prices include the article and some don’t. A January 2026 summary of freelance rates put beginners at about $0.05–$0.15 per word, mid-level writers at about $0.15–$0.40, and experienced writers at $0.40 to $1.00+. At 1,000 words, that’s roughly $50 to more than $1,000 per article.
Typical ranges
| Placement type | Typical range reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Guest post, via vendor (average) | ~$461 | BuzzStream 2026 |
| Guest post, direct from site (average) | ~$295 | BuzzStream 2026 |
| Guest post, DR 0–9 to DR 80+ | ~$200 to ~$3,000 | BuzzStream 2026 |
| Link insertion (average) | ~$179 | BuzzStream 2026 |
| Niche edit vs comparable guest post | roughly 20–40% cheaper | BlueTree, Setproduct |
These are list prices, collected mostly from vendor databases. Averages hide wide spreads, so use the direction of the numbers rather than any single figure.
Marketplace vs direct vs agency
Direct from the publisher. Usually the cheapest per placement. The cost is your time: finding sites, negotiating, chasing publication and checking that links stay live.
Marketplaces. You can search thousands of sites with filters, and checkout is simple. The price includes a margin; Setproduct estimates marketplaces charge about 30–70% more than the publisher receives. The useful question is what the margin buys you.
Agencies. You pay for strategy, outreach, writing and reporting. Setproduct puts agency pricing at about 200–500% above the publisher’s base rate. That can make sense if you have no time for the work, but it’s worth knowing what share of the fee goes to the placement.
Hidden costs to budget for
- Platform fees: buyer fees, deposit minimums, or add-ons such as insurance or express publishing.
- Tax and currency: VAT may be added, and card or PayPal conversion fees can add a few percent.
- Content: if writing isn’t included, add the writer’s fee and your editing time.
- Removals and non-indexing: a link that’s deleted or never indexed has cost you its full price.
- Your time: vetting sites, briefing, checking links and following up.
Red flags before you buy
- The site sells to everyone: a “write for us” page full of unrelated topics, or an archive of nothing but sponsored posts.
- Network signs: generic templates, “admin” bylines, and referring-domain charts that spike and then collapse.
- Falling traffic: check the trend over 12–24 months, not just today’s number.
- Hidden URLs: if a seller won’t share the domain before you pay, you can’t vet the site.
- Ranking promises: no legitimate seller can promise rankings from one link.
Buyer checklist
- Check the site’s organic traffic trend, not only its DR or DA.
- Confirm the traffic is relevant: right language, country and topic.
- Read a few recent posts. Are they real articles or thin filler?
- Ask exactly how the link will be marked, and get it in writing.
- Ask how long the post stays live and what happens if it’s removed.
- Confirm whether writing is included, and who approves the final text.
- Check the total cost after fees, tax and currency conversion.
- Check the page is indexable after publication, and recheck it every few months.
