How to check if ChatGPT mentions your business (and what to do if it doesn’t)

Updated 21 October 2026

To check if ChatGPT mentions your business, write down 10 to 20 questions your customers would ask, ask each one in ChatGPT, Google, Perplexity and Gemini while logged out, and record whether your business is named or linked. Repeat the same questions every month, because AI answers change from one day to the next.

This guide shows you how to run that check for free in about an hour, what to record, and what to do if your business doesn’t show up.

What “being mentioned by ChatGPT” means

An AI mention is when an AI assistant names your business, or links to your website, in its answer to someone’s question. There are two kinds:

  • A brand mention: the answer names you, for example “ABC Plumbing is a well-reviewed option in Austin.”
  • A citation: the answer links to a page on your site as a source.

Both are worth tracking. A mention puts your name in front of the person asking. A citation can also send them to your site.

Step by step: a free AI visibility check

  1. Write 10 to 20 real customer questions. Use the words your customers use. (Our guide to finding searches you can actually win covers how to pick them.) Mix three types: “best” questions (“best family dentist in Tucson”), problem questions (“how do I fix a leaking water heater”), and comparison questions (“is a condo or a house better for a rental in Cabo”). Add two or three brand questions, such as “What is [your business name]?”
  2. Open a private or incognito window. Log out, or use a fresh window, so your history doesn’t shape the answers.
  3. Ask each question in each assistant. Use ChatGPT, Google (look at the AI Overview at the top, or AI Mode), Perplexity and Gemini. Ask the question exactly as written. Don’t add your business name.
  4. Record what you see. For each question and assistant, note: Were you named? Were you linked? Which competitors were named? Which websites were cited as sources?
  5. Look at the sources, not just the answer. The cited websites tell you where the assistant got its information. Those are the sites you want to be mentioned on.
  6. Repeat monthly with the same questions. Keep the list fixed so you can compare month to month.

A simple tracking sheet

One row per question per assistant is enough. Here is the layout we use:

QuestionAssistantNamed?Linked?Competitors namedSources cited

best family dentist in TucsonPerplexityYesNoCompetitor AGoogle reviews, a local blog

The rows above are an example layout, not real results.

Why the answers keep changing

Ask the same question twice and you may get two different answers. AI assistants generate each reply fresh, and the ones that search the web pull in different pages each time. That’s why a single test proves very little. A monthly check with a fixed list of questions shows you the trend: are you named more often than three months ago, and by which assistants?

Free tools that can help

You don’t need a paid tool to start. The manual check above works. If you want a quick second opinion, Ahrefs offers a free AI visibility checker that looks at mentions and citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode. The free version shows a limited preview.

Paid tools exist too. They mostly automate what you’d do by hand: ask a set of questions on a schedule and log the answers.

What to do if your business isn’t mentioned

1. Make sure the assistants can read your site

Some assistants search the web before they answer. If your site blocks their crawlers, you can’t be cited. OpenAI says sites that opt out of its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Ask your web developer to check your robots.txt file and any firewall or security plugin.

For Google, there’s no special setup. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in normal search with a snippet. Google also says you don’t need special AI text files or extra markup.

2. Answer the questions on your own site

If customers ask “how much does a root canal cost in Tucson” and your site never answers it, there’s nothing for an assistant to quote. Write a clear page or post for each important question. Put the direct answer in the first two sentences. Use plain text for key facts, such as prices, hours, areas served and what’s included, not images or PDFs.

3. Get mentioned on the sites the assistants cite

This is the step most businesses miss. Look at the “sources cited” column in your sheet. If Perplexity keeps citing a local news “best of” list, a travel blog or an industry directory, being mentioned on that kind of site is your best route into the answer.

There’s research behind this. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, the factor most closely linked with being mentioned in Google’s AI Overviews was the number of times a brand was mentioned across the web (a correlation of 0.664). Branded anchor text, meaning links that use the brand’s name, came second at 0.527. Plain backlink count was much weaker at 0.218. A correlation doesn’t prove cause, but the pattern is clear: being talked about on other relevant sites matters more than raw link numbers.

Factor (Ahrefs, 75,000 brands)Correlation with AI Overview mentions
Branded web mentions0.664
Branded anchors0.527
Branded search volume0.392
Domain Rating0.326
Referring domains0.295
Number of backlinks0.218

4. Keep your business details consistent

Your name, address, phone number and description should match everywhere: your site, your Google Business Profile, directories and social profiles. Google’s own guidance for AI features includes keeping Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

5. Be patient and keep measuring

New pages need to be found and indexed before any assistant can use them. New mentions on other sites take time to be crawled too. Give changes a few months, and keep running the same monthly check so you can see what moved.

How BuyLinks handles this for you

Every BuyLinks plan includes this check. Each month we ask ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity and Gemini 25 or more of the questions your customers ask, which comes to more than 100 answers checked, and record whether your brand is mentioned and which sites are cited. Then we use that list when we pick the publisher sites for your placements, so your articles land on the kind of sites the assistants already read. You can see what each plan includes on our pricing page.

We can’t promise an assistant will mention you. Nobody honestly can. What we can do is measure it every month and show you the trend.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I check if ChatGPT mentions my business?

Once a month is enough for most small businesses. Answers vary day to day, so checking daily mostly shows noise. Use the same list of questions each month so the results are comparable.

Can I pay ChatGPT to mention my business?

Not in the answer itself. OpenAI has started showing ads to some ChatGPT users, but it says ads are labeled as sponsored, kept separate, and do not influence the answers ChatGPT gives. The practical route into the answers is to have clear answers on your own site and to be mentioned on the websites the assistants use as sources.

Why does Perplexity mention me but ChatGPT doesn’t?

Each assistant uses its own search sources and its own way of choosing what to include. It’s common to show up in one and not another. Look at which sites each one cites for your questions, and aim to be mentioned on those.

Do I need special code or an AI file on my website?

Not for Google. Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Make sure your site isn’t blocking the crawlers the assistants use.

Do backlinks help with AI mentions?

They can, but mentions of your brand appear to matter more than the raw number of links. In the Ahrefs study above, branded web mentions were about three times more closely linked to AI Overview visibility than backlink count.
