Link insertion vs guest post: which should you buy?

Updated 21 October 2026

A link insertion is usually cheaper and faster, because your link goes into an article that already exists. A guest post costs more, but you get a new article written around your business, more control over the message, and a choice from far more sites. For most small businesses, guest posts should be the core and insertions an occasional extra when a strong, relevant page already exists.

Here’s how the two compare on price, speed, control and risk, with figures from large public datasets.

What each one is

A guest post is a new article published on another website, with a link to your site inside it. You or the seller writes it, and the site owner approves it.

A link insertion, also called a niche edit, is a link added to an article that’s already published on another site. Nothing new is written, or just a sentence or two is added around your link.

Price figures come from BuzzStream’s studies of guest post costs (257,267 sites) and link insertion costs (421,259 sites). Both are list prices from seller databases, so treat them as rough market ranges, not quotes.

Price: insertions are cheaper, but compare like with like

On average, an insertion costs well under half of a guest post. Part of the reason is work: the publisher doesn’t have to edit and publish a new article. The gap narrows as quality rises. BuzzStream’s insertion averages by Domain Rating look like this:

Domain Rating bandAverage insertion price
DR 0 to 9$113
DR 20 to 29$188
DR 40 to 49$197
DR 60 to 69$296
DR 80+$461

For guest posts, the same study puts the average at around $200 at the bottom of the DR scale and around $3,000 at DR 80 and above. Also remember that a guest post price may or may not include writing. If it doesn’t, add the cost of an article. Our guest post cost guide breaks down what drives the price.

Speed: insertions usually go live sooner

An insertion is often live within days, because the page already exists and is often already indexed. A guest post has more steps: topic approval, writing, edits, publishing, then waiting for Google to find the new page.

Faster to go live doesn’t mean faster results. How quickly a link helps depends far more on the site and on how competitive your searches are than on the type of placement.

Control: guest posts win clearly

With a guest post you decide the angle, the facts about your business, and where the link sits. You can explain what you do and why it matters to that site’s readers. That makes the placement useful even beyond the link: people can learn about you, and your business is named in a full article.

With an insertion you’re fitting into someone else’s article. The surrounding text wasn’t written about you, and a link that feels bolted on can look out of place to readers.

Choice: far more sites offer guest posts

In BuzzStream’s data, only about 14.9% of sites offered link insertions, while guest posts were priced on almost every site. If your niche is narrow, say luxury real estate in one city or software for dentists, you may find no relevant insertion options at all. Guest posts give you far more sites to choose from.

Risk: different weak spots

Both carry the same basic rule: under Google’s spam policies, paid links that pass ranking credit should be labeled sponsored or nofollow. Our guide on whether buying backlinks is safe covers this in detail.

Beyond that, the risks differ:

  • Insertions: older articles are the ones site owners update, merge or delete. When that happens, your link can vanish. Links disappear more than people expect in general: an Ahrefs study of about 2 million websites found 66.5% of links to them over nine years had died.
  • Guest posts: the main risk is the site. Many sites that accept guest posts will publish anything for money. Our checklist on how to check if a backlink is good helps you spot those.

When to choose each

Choose a guest post when:

  • You want your business explained, not just linked.
  • Your niche is specific and you need a site that truly fits.
  • You want a page that can be found and shared on its own.
  • You want your brand named on sites that AI assistants read and cite.

Choose a link insertion when:

  • A strong, relevant article already exists on a good site, and your page is a genuinely useful addition to it.
  • That article already gets traffic, so readers will actually see your link.
  • You want a quick, lower-cost addition to a plan that’s mostly guest posts.

How BuyLinks decides for you

We don’t push one format. When we build your plan, we look at each site and the pages you want to rank, then pick the format that fits that placement. We write an article for every placement, so most placements are guest posts: they give the most control and the widest choice. Each placement in your plan shows the site, its grade, the format, the link label and the price before you approve anything. You can see how this looks in our sample plan, and what each package includes on our pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

Is a niche edit the same as a link insertion?

Yes. Both terms mean adding a link to an article that’s already published. Some sellers use “niche edit” for insertions in closely related articles, but there’s no strict difference.

Are link insertions safe?

They follow the same rules as any paid link. If the link is meant to pass ranking credit and isn’t labeled, it goes against Google’s spam policies. The site’s quality matters more than the format.

Why are link insertions cheaper than guest posts?

The publisher does less work: no new article to edit or publish. Fewer sites offer insertions, and many of those that do are low quality, which also pulls the average price down.

Which one is better for showing up in AI answers?

There’s no study that compares the two directly. A guest post usually names and describes your business in more depth, which is closer to the kind of brand mention that research links with AI visibility.
