How to show up in Google AI Overviews: what Google actually says

Updated 21 October 2026

To show up in Google AI Overviews, your page needs to be indexed by Google and eligible to appear in normal search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra requirements and no special tricks, so the work is making a clear, crawlable page that answers the question, and getting your business mentioned on the other sites Google pulls from.

Below is what Google’s own documentation says, what recent research adds, and a step-by-step plan a small business can follow.

What is a Google AI Overview?

An AI Overview is a short AI-written answer that Google shows at the top of some search results, with links to the web pages it drew from.

They reach a lot of people. In July 2025, Google said AI Overviews had over 2 billion monthly users across more than 200 countries and territories. Google also runs AI Mode, a separate chat-style search tab. The same guidance covers both.

AI Overviews are one of several AI assistants your customers use. Our main guide on how to get your business mentioned by ChatGPT, Google AI and Perplexity covers all of them together.

What Google actually says

Google has one help page for site owners on this: AI features and your website. The key points, in plain words:

  • No extra requirements. Google says there are “no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimizations necessary.”
  • Indexed and snippet-eligible. A page must be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Meeting that bar doesn’t guarantee it will be used.
  • No special files or markup. Google says you don’t need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear.
  • Normal SEO still applies. Allow crawling, link to your pages from your own site, keep important content in text, give people a good page experience, and keep structured data matching what’s visible on the page.
  • Keep your listings current. Google lists keeping Business Profile and Merchant Center information up to date.

Google also explains how the answers are built. AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a “query fan-out” method: they run several related searches on subtopics, then pull supporting pages from all of them. That’s why the links in an AI Overview often differ from the top ten blue links.

Do you need to rank on page one?

Not always, and less than before. Ahrefs studied 863,000 search results and 4 million cited URLs. In its March 2026 update, it found that 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also appeared in the top 10 results. In its July 2025 run, the figure was about 76%. Ahrefs thinks query fan-out explains much of the drop, though that’s its interpretation, not a confirmed fact.

Where the cited page ranked for the original search (Ahrefs, 2026)Share of AI Overview citations
Top 10 results37.9%
Positions 11 to 10031.2%
Not in the top 10031.0%

For a small business this is good news. You don’t have to beat national sites for a big search to be cited. A page that answers one narrow follow-up question well can be pulled in through one of those related searches.

How to show up in Google AI Overviews: 7 steps

  1. Check that Google can crawl and index the page. In Google Search Console, use the URL Inspection tool on your key pages. If a page isn’t indexed, it can’t be used. Also ask your web developer to check robots.txt, your firewall and any CDN or security plugin for rules that block Googlebot.
  2. Don’t block snippets by accident. Google’s preview controls, nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet, limit what can be shown from your page, and noindex removes it. Some themes and plugins add these without you knowing. Use them only on purpose.
  3. Pick the questions your customers ask. Write down 10 to 20 real questions. Mix “best” questions, problem questions and comparison questions. Our guide to finding searches you can actually win shows how to pick ones a smaller site can win.
  4. Answer each question in the first two sentences. Give each important question its own page or section. Put the full answer at the top, then the detail. AI answers tend to lift short passages that make sense on their own.
  5. Keep key facts in plain text. Prices, hours, service areas, what’s included and how long things take should be written on the page, not locked in images or PDFs. Use tables for comparisons and numbered steps for how-tos.
  6. Keep your Business Profile complete and consistent. Your name, address, phone, hours and categories should match your website and your directory listings.
  7. Get mentioned on other relevant sites. AI Overviews draw on many sources, not just yours. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest link with being named in AI Overviews (a correlation of 0.664), well ahead of backlink count (0.218). That’s a correlation, not proof of cause, but it points to being talked about on the sites your customers read.

What doesn’t help

  • “AI text files” or special schema. Google says you don’t need them for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
  • Keyword stuffing. Repeating a phrase doesn’t make a page more useful, and it can count against you under Google’s normal spam rules.
  • Thin pages for every variation. Ten near-identical pages for ten city names rarely help. One strong page per real service or question does more.
  • Anyone promising a spot. Google doesn’t sell places in AI Overviews, and it says meeting the requirements doesn’t guarantee inclusion. No one can honestly promise you’ll appear.

How to tell if you’re showing up

Search Console won’t give you a separate AI Overview report. Google says traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode is included in your overall search data, in the Performance report under the “Web” search type.

So check by hand as well. Once a month, search your list of questions in a private window and note whether you’re named, whether you’re linked, and which other sites are cited. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT mentions your business has a simple tracking sheet you can use for Google AI too.

How BuyLinks helps

We do two of the steps above for you. Every plan includes a monthly AI visibility check: 25 or more of your customers’ questions asked in ChatGPT, Google AI, Perplexity and Gemini, which comes to more than 100 answers checked. We record whether you’re named and which sites are cited. Then we use that list to choose the publisher sites for your articles, so your business gets mentioned on the kind of sites Google already pulls from.

We write every article, state each link’s label up front, and never need access to your site. Plans start at $199 a month; see what each plan includes. We can’t promise you’ll appear in an AI Overview. We can measure it every month and show you what changed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay Google to appear in an AI Overview?

No. Inclusion in the AI-written answer isn’t for sale. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and even then inclusion isn’t guaranteed. Ads are a separate product.

Do I need schema markup to show up in AI Overviews?

No. Google says no special schema is needed for its AI features. If you already use structured data, keep it matching the visible text on the page.

Can I stop my site appearing in AI Overviews?

You can limit it. The nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet controls restrict what Google can show from a page, and noindex removes the page from search. These also affect your normal search snippets, so use them with care.

How long does it take to show up?

There’s no fixed timeline. A new page has to be crawled and indexed first, and new mentions on other sites need to be crawled too. Give changes a few months and keep checking the same questions each month.

Does blocking Google-Extended remove me from AI Overviews?

No. Google says Google-Extended doesn’t affect a site’s inclusion in Google Search. AI Overviews are part of Search and are controlled through Googlebot and the snippet controls.
